By Tuesday 4 June, you will receive 2 new bins.
- A mini bin or a plastic crate for your glass (we are trialling 2 collection methods)
- A food and green waste bin, if you don't already have one.
For your waste and recycling collections from Tuesday 11 June, we'll be asking you to:
- separate your food and green waste from your landfill waste
- separate your glass from your other recycling
- make sure you know what can and can't be recycled by our new waste service provider.

What you can recycle is also changing and you can read more about what these recycling changes are.
Do I have to participate?
Yes, your participation is compulsory. By participating, you are helping us understand what works and what doesn’t, and improving our waste services throughout Yarra.
If you have trouble understanding how to sort your waste, or need instructions in a different language, please contact us at 9205 5555 or email us at email@example.com.
Why is the service changing?
The Yarra Waste Revolution is our chance as a community to help fix our waste and recycling system.
The revolution is a trial that introduces a new way for you to sort your waste and for us to collect and treat it. Following this trial we will consider expanding the service throughout Yarra in 2020.
Our long-term ambition is to move our community towards producing zero waste. First, by creating circular economies (using what we’ve thrown out, to make what we need), and second, by minimising the waste we produce. We hope you are excited!
Why am I involved?
You and your close neighbours in Abbotsford have been chosen to be part of the Yarra Waste Revolution’s ‘trial area’. It includes approximately 1,300 households who will now have a new way of sorting and treating their waste.
This revolution builds on the successful food and garden waste collection trial we started last year in parts of Abbotsford. Results of that trial have been very positive thanks to many of you. Residents were able to reduce their waste going to landfill by nearly half (nearly 50% less in the kerbside landfill bin every week).
We chose you for the revolution as you and your neighbours offer a great mix of homes and businesses in the City of Yarra. So we think we can learn a lot from working with you to make the Yarra Waste Revolution a success.
What are the issues the trial is trying to fix?
We need to change how we recycle: as individuals, as a community and as a municipality. And we’re going to do this through the Yarra Waste Revolution.
We want to help fix the recycling industry, create local jobs and use waste as a resource, instead of sending it to landfill. Your participation is vital to help us succeed.

What else can I do to help?
We can all play an important role in making the Yarra Waste Revolution work.
There are a few things you can do to reduce both your and Yarra’s environmental footprint:
- Be mindful of what you buy and try to avoid things with excessive packaging, plastics you only use once or things you don't need and end up throwing away (including food you don't eat).
- Choose products made from recycled materials.
- Reuse what you already have.
- Recycle your items properly so the things you throw away have the best chance of becoming the things we need.
