We provide various types of support and opportunities for volunteers and volunteer organisations throughout Yarra, such as skills development, awards and events, networking, grants, discounted venue hire and partnerships with community organisations.

L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program

Yarra Youth Services offer volunteer supervising driver opportunities through their L2P – Learner Driver Mentor Program.

Neighbourhood House Programs

Yarra’s Neighbourhood Houses provide a range of programs and activities specifically for their local communities. Volunteer opportunities regularly become available, contact the centres directly.

Yarra Volunteer Leaders Network

Founded in November 2018, the Yarra Volunteer Leaders Network (YVLN) is a support group for people with an interest in volunteerism in the Yarra municipality. The network aims to create an inviting and open forum based on sharing and mutual respect.

The key objectives of the network is to:

  • Connect and network with other people with an interest in supporting volunteering
  • Collaborate on joint initiatives
  • Provide professional development opportunities
  • Share learnings and resources
  • Promote volunteering and advocate for volunteers rights
  • Engage with the community, and
  • Plan more sustainable and systematic volunteering practices. 

Meetings are held quarterly at the Richmond Town Hall and membership is open to people who manage volunteers or organisations wanting to start a new volunteer initiative in the City of Yarra.

Free skills training for volunteers and community groups

Sharpen your skills by joining our free community training program. Different sessions are run throughout the year to support volunteers, people who manage volunteers, members of committees, not-for profit and community organisations in Yarra to help them run as effectively as possible. 

This is a great opportunity for people involved in local community organisations to seek advice and information about how to apply for grants, managing relationships, project management and media strategies.

Volunteer Match helps people from across Australia match their skills from industries such as IT, hospitality, design, accounting, law and sales to a relevant and rewarding volunteer role.

 HelpOUT is Volunteering Victoria's service targeted at spontaneous emergency volunteers. It operates operates year-round and registers interested volunteers, linking them to organisations working in disaster-affected communities.

Vollie is an online marketplace that connects talented people to non-profits, charities and social enterprises for skills-based online volunteering.

Australian Volunteers  provides opportunities for all kinds of volunteer work in 26 countries across the Indo-Pacific region. 

Volunteering Victoria is the state peak body for volunteering, focusing on advocacy, sector development and the promotion of volunteering.

Volunteering Australia is the national peak body for volunteering, working to advance volunteering in the community.

Victorian State Government Volunteering is an online community and information resource for Victorian volunteers and volunteering organisations.

JusticeConnect provides legal advice, information and training for not-for-profit organisations through their law program. They work to reduce red tape and improve the legal framework for community organisations.

Not-for-profit information allows you to browse a range of helpful publications and resources, supporting the Victorian not-for-profit community sector to strengthen capacity, governance and sustainability.

Pro Bono Australia provides an online hub for people who want to know more about the national community sector.

Goodcompany fosters corporate and skilled volunteering.

Creative Partnerships Australia for arts organisations.

Leadership Victoria now includes the GreatConnections program. 

Corporate Volunteering tools to develop a corporate volunteering program.    

Work experience and student placements

Council offers work experience and placements to secondary and tertiary students currently engaged in Australian educational institutions, as well as to those who are not currently studying but are seeking to gain practical work experience. Volunteer grants

We provide a range of community grants as well as discounted hire of Council venues to not-for-profit community groups who operate in Yarra.

Volunteer Grants of funding between $1,000 and $5,000 to help not-for-profit organisations are also available through federal government.

Yarra Volunteer Strategy

We value volunteerism in our municipality and have therefore developed a volunteer strategy for the City of Yarra, which is a key initiative of the Council Plan 2017-2021. 

We spoke to the community and local organisations about volunteering in Yarra to find out how council can better support the local sector. We received more than 350 responses, thank you to all those who contributed.

The final Volunteer Strategy and Year One Action Plan will be presented to council in September and published shortly after that. 

Victorian Volunteer Strategy

The Victorian Government has committed to develop and implement a Volunteer Strategy to support and enhance volunteerism in Victoria. Consultation is currently open so have your say. Go here for the surveys which is open for comment until 24 November 2019.
