The 2024 Influenza (flu) vaccine will be available at our community walk-in centres from mid-April onwards for all people aged 6 months and older. This includes the flu vaccine specifically for people aged 65 and years and older. 

If you/your child are not due other vaccines, it is strongly advisable to book into our Influenza-only clinics to prevent long wait times. Please see booking links below.

Eligibility

Flu vaccines are available to some people for free, including: 

• Children aged 6 months to less than 5 years
• Pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy
• First Nations people aged 6 months and over
• People aged 65 years and over
• People aged 6 months and over with certain medical conditions which increase the risk of influenza disease complications including severe asthma, lung or heart disease, lower immunity, diabetes, chronic neurological conditions, kidney disease.

The cost of the flu vaccine is $20 per dose for anyone not eligible for the publicly funded vaccine. We are accepting EFTPOS payments only.

Immunisation records

We hold records of vaccines administered by Yarra City Council. Records are not held for vaccinations given by other health providers. You can request your Yarra City Council Immunisation records.

Immunisation history statement

You can obtain a complete immunisation history statement from your myGov account or you can call Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) on 1800 653 809.

You can also visit a Medicare or Centrelink office.

Immunisation status certificate

A school entry immunisation status certificate is an up-to-date record of your child's immunisations. It is a legal requirement to provide this on enrolment in primary school in Victoria.

In most cases you will receive this certificate automatically from AIR when your child has received their 4-year-old immunisation. It is mailed to your address that is registered with Medicare.

If you have any difficulties obtaining your child’s vaccine records from the Australian Immunisation Register please contact our  Immunisation Team.

Under the National Immunisation Program and School Immunisation Program, children aged from six weeks to 19 years are eligible to receive publicly funded vaccines as outlined on the immunisation schedule.

"No jab no play" policy

Due to the introduction of the "no jab no play" policy, there is a free vaccine catch-up program for children up to 19 years of age who may have missed any childhood vaccinations.

What if my child was immunised overseas?

You will need to contact us as we will need to sight the immunisation record of your child.

We can advise you of any vaccines that your child may have missed.  

We will update your child's immunisation records on the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) and email you (or your nominated childcare/school) the record once the history has been processed.

Our immunisation team visits secondary schools within our council three times a year to vaccinate Year 7 and Year 10 students.

Our immunisation schedule is in accordance with the Department of Health and Aged Care's National Immunisation Program and is recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).

Our school immunisation programs administer the following vaccines to secondary school students:

Year 7 students

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine

1 dose given.

This protects against certain viruses that can cause cancers later in life. This includes head, neck cervical and some genital cancers. The HPV vaccine is administered at this age to maximise its effectiveness before adolescents may be exposed to these viruses.

From 6 February 2023, the dose schedule for the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine will change to a single dose, and eligibility for the catch-up program will be extended up to and including 25 years of age under the National Immunisation Program (NIP)

Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (Boostrix) booster vaccine

1 dose given.

Year 10 students

Meningococcal ACWY (Nimenrix) vaccine

1 dose given.

This protects against four strains of the Meningococcal disease. Although uncommon, the disease can cause serious permanent disabilities. This includes brain damage, hearing loss and limb amputations, as well as death in 10% of cases.

Adolescents that are not in Year 10, but aged between 15-19 years, can also receive the Meningococcal ACWY vaccine at no cost from their GP or our immunisation clinics.

Catch-up sessions

We also provide a free catch-up session for all students who missed their vaccinations according to the National Immunisation Program Schedule. 

This is available for all students that live in or outside the council area.

You do not need to book an appointment with us for immunisations. All of our sessions are walk-in only.

If your child is having the Meningococcal B vaccine, and is under 2 years old, we recommend they have Paracetamol.

Please give a first dose of Paracetamol 30 minutes before the Meningococcal B vaccine, or as soon as possible after vaccination. Give two further doses after vaccinations, spaced six hours apart.

It is not necessary to give Paracetamol before other vaccinations.

Please bring your child's green health records book and your Medicare card, if available.

Please do not bring self-purchased vaccinations to our sessions as they will not be administered.

It is important to stay 15 minutes after being vaccinated so we can monitor and respond to any immediate reactions.

Please see your GP or emergency department (after hours) if you experience a reaction after your immunisation session that's unexpected, severe and doesn't go away.

Adverse events following immunisation may be reported to SAFEVAC following vaccination.

The encounter usually takes around 30 minutes.

You will be greeted by our friendly administration staff who will guide you through the paperwork.

You will then meet one of our experienced nurse immunisers and have an opportunity to talk through the immunisations and possible side effects.

Afterwards, you will be asked to stay for 15 minutes for observations.
