Busking permits

We encourage busking and street entertainment in Yarra. If you want to busk in Yarra you must apply for a permit.

Permits are only issued month by month.

Our busking policy sets out conditions for street performances, including rules for volume levels, performance times and appropriate performance locations. See below for more information and how to apply.

Busking in Yarra

Acceptable volume

Your performance must be within acceptable volume level, so as not to inconvenience the public or the operation of businesses in the area.

If your performance can be clearly heard from the other side of a main street or within a habitable room, it is deemed to be too loud. The use of battery or mains voltage amplification is not allowed for busking in Yarra.

Terminate performances

A Yarra City Council Officer may at any time instruct you to immediately terminate you performance if the Officer deems it to be too loud, offensive, dangerous or harmful to private or public property or you are busking without a permit.

Public liability insurance

It is not a mandatory condition that buskers hold and maintain a public liability insurance policy, however, in certain circumstances the absence of appropriate coverage may leave a busker open to personal liability in the event that a negligent act leads to a third party’s injury or loss.
Council’s public liability insurance policy does not cover a busker’s liability exposures.

How to apply for a permit

Step 1

Download and read the Busking Conditions & Policy.

Step 2

Complete the Application for Temporary Busking Permit and sign the Declaration

Step 3

Submit the completed application form and send it by email to [email protected] and it will be assessed.

Busking Permit Fee: $16.50 GST Free (monthly fee)

Step 4

Once your application has been assessed and approved, an invoice will be sent to you to pay the busking permit fee.

To pay online you will need to enter your online reference number located on your invoice.
