Yarra City Council launches Rainbow Yarra 'Queer Is...' Campaign to Celebrate the Local LGBTIQA+ Community

The new campaign aligns with the 2024 Midsumma Festival, shining a light on members of Yarra’s LGBTIQA+ community and celebrating the diversity, joy and strength of these communities.

The Queer Is... campaign champions Yarra’s diverse and vibrant LGBTIQA+ community, asking them what it means to be queer in Yarra, telling their stories and sharing their experiences in their own words through a series of street posters and online content.

Running alongside Australia's premier LGBTIQA+ cultural festival, Midsumma, the campaign features Yarra residents, visitors, artists and members of the city’s many queer community groups.

Yarra Council has a strong and longstanding partnership with Midsumma and will host the much-loved Victoria’s Pride Street Party for the third year in a row next month in Fitzroy and Collingwood.

Council will also refresh the iconic rainbow footpaths at the corners of Gertrude/Smith Streets and Peel/Smith Streets in Collingwood/Fitzroy this month, inclusive of updating the artwork to incorporate the Intersex Inclusive Progress Pride Flag.

"This new campaign builds on Yarra’s existing support and solidarity with our LGBTIQA+ community” said Yarra Mayor Edward Crossland.

“We’re very lucky to have such a bold, diverse and vibrant queer community in Yarra, and we are incredibly proud to celebrate them through the Queer Is... campaign.”

This campaign is part of Rainbow Yarra  a brand identity and platform created in 2021 following the adoption of Council’s LGBTIQA+ Strategy 2021-2024.

The strategy is about welcoming and celebrating diversity, connecting people and services, supporting Yarra’s LGBTIQA+ communities and creating an inclusive Yarra.
