Council and committee meetings

You can learn what will be covered in each Council meeting by reading the meeting's agenda. To find a meeting's agenda, please check the meeting page the Wednesday prior to the meeting.

At an ordinary Council meeting, there are two ways you can address the Council.

Address an agenda item

You can register to address Council about an item on the meeting's agenda. During the meeting, you will then have 3 minutes to address the Council, or 2 minutes if more than 9 people have registered to speak on the same item. The chair of the meeting may also ask that a representative of a group speak on a group's behalf.

When registering you must:

  • identify the item on the agenda you wish to address
  • provide your name and contact details

Visit the Council meeting page the week before the meeting to find out how to register. In accordance with our Governance Rules [ PDF, 706.8 KB] , registrations close at 6.30pm on the day prior to the meeting.

Ask a question during Question time

During Question time, you can have 3 minutes to ask a question of Council.

The meeting's chair, or a person nominated by the chair, will respond to your question.

You are only allowed to ask one question at any meeting, unless the Chair requests that you ask a question of clarification. If requested to ask a question of clarification, you will be given a further minute to speak.

Council can prepare information to respond to your question if you submit a question in advance of the meeting. You can submit a question in advance by visiting the Council meeting page the week before the meeting, then follow the link to register to speak.

A petition is a formal written document that expresses concern about an issue and requests action be taken.

To be formally tabled at a Council meeting a petition must be submitted on paper. Only a Councillor can table it at a Yarra City Council meeting.
