Bins for Yarra’s new food and garden organic (FOGO) collection service will soon start being delivered across Yarra to every household and organisation that receives a waste collection service from Council.

The delivery of bins to all properties that receive our service is a large task and will take place between the beginning of April to the end of June.

Yarra City Council is introducing a new kerbside waste stream starting on the week of the 1 July 2024. This new FOGO collection service will provide our community with a new avenue to reduce waste, recycle more materials and contribute to a circular economy.

It is important to remember that the first collection service for your FOGO bin will not take place until the week of 1 July. Please make sure you store your bin until it is time for it to be used.

The first residents to receive their bins will be those in most southern suburbs of Yarra including Burnley, Richmond and Cremorne.

Once collections commence in July, your FOGO bin will be collected weekly on the same day that your rubbish bin is collected. Collection frequency for residents in the Abbotsford alternate collections area remain unchanged.

Along with your bin, you will also receive some information about the new service and a guide on how to use it effectively. Please keep this for your reference.

When the collection service begins, the organic material collected will be turned into compost or fertilizer. This will reduce the volume of waste sent to landfill, reduce emissions, and reduce harm to our environment.

If you’re interested in speaking to a member of Yarra’s waste team about this new service, take a look at our range of in-person events.
