Yarra's first Reverse Vending Machine is being installed at Collingwood Leisure Centre as part of the Victorian Government's Container Deposit Scheme.

The next stage of the Victorian Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic) is about to begin in Yarra with the installation of our first reverse vending machine (RVM). These new reverse vending machines are developed and installed by Visy and will provide a self-service option for residents to be reimbursed for recycling eligible containers including cans, cartons, glass and plastic bottles between 150ml and 1L in size.

Thank you for your feedback on the locations identified for the installation of RVMs back in September. Based on your feedback we saw strong support for the installation of a reverse vending machine within the carpark at Collingwood Leisure Centre on Turnbull Street in Clifton Hill.

Council has organised for the installation of the RVM at Collingwood Leisure Centre from 5am to 8.30am on Tuesday 19 December. Please note during the installation the carpark will be closed to all users. The section of the carpark that will house the reverse vending machine will be fenced off from sometime on Monday 18 December. We apologise for any inconvenience this causes.

To support servicing of the machine and to prepare the site, works will also occur from 7am to 11am on Friday 15 December. This will close off one lane of the car park entry, but users of the centre will still be able to enter and leave the carpark as they please.

CDS Vic is a Victorian Government initiative that rewards Victorians with a 10-cent refund for every eligible drinking container at designated refund points. The first week following the launch of the CDS Vic on Wednesday 1 November 2023 saw 10 million containers dropped off across Victoria.

We've been working with the Victorian Government to provide our residents with additional opportunities to recycle more materials through CDS Vic. IGA Abbotsford has been accepting containers since the scheme launched as an over-the-counter refund point.

Preparations are taking place to finalise and install RVMs at two or three more sites across the municipality. These locations are yet to be confirmed and will be announced soon.
