Building a safer Wellington Street

Wednesday 11 October 2023

Cyclist with backpack cycling down Wellington Street, with cars in the background.

We want to understand your experiences travelling on the northern part of Wellington Street to inform our initial designs for the Strategic Cycling Corridor.

We're making walking, riding bikes and using scooters safer and more accessible for people of all ages and abilities.

As part of this plan, we are completing the Wellington Street Strategic Cycling Corridor that has been more than ten years in the making.

This will make the street safer and more attractive for those making the 2,000 trips down Wellington Street by bike every day and inspire new people to ride.

What has happened in the area to date?

These upgrades to the Wellington Street Strategic Cycling Corridor are part of delivering the New Deal for Cycling, which aims to improve Yarra’s active transport network to best practice standards.

These routes are identified in the Yarra Transport Strategy 2022-32 which was developed with extensive community consultation and expert advice over many years. This also aligns with the State Government’s Strategic Cycling Corridors.

Stage 1 of the Wellington Street upgrades were completed in 2015 and upgraded the section between Victoria Parade and Gipps Street in Collingwood. Stage 2 was completed in 2019 and covers between Gipps Street and Johnston Street. The upgrades in Stage One and Two included:

replacement of painted bike lanes with physically protected lanes between Victoria Parade and Johnston Street
treatments at intersections and side streets to improve safety
installation of concrete separators
tree planting and garden beds
additional bike access points
signal retiming
kerb outstands
additional pedestrian crossings
signal retiming

Since the upgrades began, the number of cyclists using the street has increased by 56% compared to 2012.

Tell us what you think!

We want to understand your experiences travelling on the northern half of Wellington Street to inform our initial designs for Stage Three and Four. Stage Three covers between Johnston Street and Alexandra Parade in Collingwood. Stage Four covers between Alexandra Parade and Queens Parade in Clifton Hill.

Now is your chance to let us know:

  • What are the current issues and pain points for anyone travelling via Wellington Street?
  • How can we improve the street for active transport users like cyclists and pedestrians?

Act fast! This consultation closes at 9am Monday 6 November 2023.
