Trial of medically supervised injecting room starting soon

Wednesday 27 June 2018

The State Government is trialling a medically supervised injecting room at North Richmond Community Health in Lennox Street, Richmond.

This location has been selected because drugs of dependence are frequently bought and publically injected in the surrounding area. The new facility will provide health services, reduce public injecting and aims to reduce the number of discarded syringes in public places.

We have long supported a harm minimisation approach, which is widely accepted as best practice in reducing the impacts of illicit drug use. Supervision greatly reduces the likelihood of overdose-related deaths.

The facility is managed by North Richmond Community Health and is due to open early July 2018.

We are working closely with the State Government, Victoria Police, NRCH and other frontline agencies to manage any impacts on local amenity.
