Collingwood Leisure Centre pool, spa and sauna closure 6-13 May

Friday 04 May 2018

As part of our ongoing commitment to the safety of all our members, we’re implementing a suite of measures to improve safety at the Collingwood Leisure Centre pool.

The improvements began with the completion of new non-slip flooring on the pool deck in early April, and the next we will be installing a new safety barrier in the leisure pool.

The entire pool (including spa and sauna) and the crèche will be closed from Sunday 6 May to Sunday 13 May to enable these works to take place. The pool will reopen on Monday 14 May.

The gym, group exercise studio, spin room and change rooms will not be affected by the works and will remain open during this time.

What will the works involve?

A clear glass barrier will extend the existing wall of the access ramp that provides access to the main lap pool. The height of the existing ramp wall will also be extended by the addition of a glass barrier.

The new barrier will effectively separate the leisure pool (which is mainly used by children and families) from the main lap pool.

Why are these works required?

The safety of children is our priority. The installation of the safety barrier is intended to prevent children from accessing the deeper main pool from the leisure pool.

Why does the whole pool have to close?

The leisure pool will be drained and contractors will be working in and around the pool. The entire pool area needs to be closed to ensure safety of the public and enable the works to be completed as quickly as possible.

What other safety improvements are planned?

We are committed to ensuring that our pool safety policies and procedure s continue to meet or exceed industry best-practice. We have begun a review of our safety procedures across all 3 of Yarra’s public pools. When our review is complete we will inform all pool users of any changes to pool supervision rules.

In addition, we’ll also be introducing a state-of-the-art Pool Pod to provide independent pool access for wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility.

How does this affect Learn to Swim classes and Open Age Squad sessions?

All Learn to Swim classes will be cancelled during the week of the closure. All participants will receive a full refund for this week. The refund will be automatically applied to direct debit holders. For term payment holders the credit will be applied to your learn to swim account.

An amended Open Age Squad timetable will run for the week. View the amended squad timetable (PDF, 41kb).

What happens to Aqua classes during the closure?

All Aqua group exercise classes at Collingwood will be cancelled whilst these works take place (6-13 May).

We are running additional Aqua classes at Richmond Recreation Centre during this period. Please see the modified Aqua timetable for Richmond Recreation Centre for Sunday 6 May through to Sunday 13 May (PDF, 95kb).

The normal Aqua timetable will resume on Monday 14 May.

Where can I go for a swim, spa or sauna during the closure?

During the closure, you are welcome to use the Fitzroy Swimming Pool (outdoor pool, spa, sauna and steam) or Richmond Recreation Centre (indoor pool, spa, sauna and steam).

We apologise for the inconvenience and look forward to seeing you back at Collingwood Leisure Centre from Monday 14 May.
