Governance essentials for community organisations

Monday 21 August 2017 -

Governance is the system of checks and balances for leaders of not for profit organisations, which help them steer the organisation. That sounds simple yet volunteer non-profit and charitable boards and committees must wade through the complex legal and regulatory environment in which they operate.

Good governance leads to positive committee member experience, proper management of conflicts of interest and risk, good understanding and planning for financial controls and an organisation that thrives even through adversity. Members, funders and donors gain confidence when good governance and transparency are in place and the outcome is greater value delivered to the community.

 Topics include:

  • Assessing if good governance is in place for your group
  • Understanding the Committee’s role in planning
  • Oversight and monitoring the finances
  • Managing organisational risk
  • Identifying the entities legal structure and the implications for this
  • Outlining the roles and responsibilities of the committee and determining if there are any conflicts of interest
  • Running effective AGMs
