Celebration Dreaming by Robert Young with Heesco and Makatron

Tuesday 04 July 2017 - Sunday 31 December 2017

Fitzroy, Gertrude Street, and the Charcoal Lane building are intrinsically connected with the Aboriginal community. This neighbourhood is the thread of so many stories and memories for Aboriginal people in Victoria. Charcoal Lane's eastern, exterior wall offers an opportunity to educate audiences about the Aboriginal significance and history of this area.

A Gunnai Waradgerie man, Robert Young focuses on Aboriginal identity in his work and provides an opportunity for people to connect or reconnect with Aboriginal culture and history. The Charcoal Lane mural illustrates three main themes that are important for Aboriginal people: respecting Aboriginal history; acknowledging the present; and planning for the future. The presence of the mural in the street fosters a welcoming environment for all.

Entitled Celebration Dreaming, this large-scale dynamic artwork enlivens the streetscape, promotes inclusion, incites conversation, and contributes to the creative capital of this locale. Welcoming visitors to the area and to Charcoal Lane, the mural also highlights the important role that the restaurant plays in providing guidance, support and opportunities to young Aboriginal people.

The Charcoal Lane mural Celebration Dreaming by Robert Young with Heesco and Makatron was funded by the Victorian Government’s Community Crime Prevention Program.
