Update on the proposed new pocket park on Charlotte Street

Monday 31 July 2023

Render of concept plan of pocket park showing figures enjoying and relaxing in the space on Charlotte Street, outside the Richmond Library.

At the Council Meeting earlier this month, Councillors approved community consultation on the Charlotte Street Pocket Park draft Concept Plan. Yarra City Council has subsequently launched its second round of engagement on this project to take place in August 2023.

This draft Concept Plan responds to the key themes identified from the initial feedback provided by the community at the end of last year. It aims to create a public open space with trees and greenery for people to gather, socialise and relax, while also taking into consideration the concerns raised by some participants.

We now invite the community to tell us their thoughts on the draft Concept Plan. You can do this by visiting the Your Say Yarra page and submitting your feedback via the online form, or by attending one of our in-person drop-in sessions at Richmond Library.

Speak to us in-person:

Wednesday 9 August from 5pm to 7pm - a Vietnamese member of staff will be in attendance to offer language support.

Friday 18 August from 11am to 1pm - an Italian member of staff will be in attendance to offer language support.

Saturday 26 August from 10am to 12pm - a Chinese member of staff will be in attendance to offer language support.

Project background

To make sure more of our community has access to nearby open space, we’re proposing to close the western end of Charlotte Street (between Church and St Crispin streets, in front of Richmond Library) to turn it into a small pocket park.

This exciting new pocket park would provide greenery, shade and seating, making it an area to relax in and to meet friends.

The possibility of creating a park in this location was first noted as part of the Swan Street Streetscape Masterplan in 2022. During the community consultation for the masterplan, the idea of reclaiming the roadway to create a pocket park in Charlotte Street was well-supported with:

  • 68% agreeing to the proposal
  • 25% objecting
  • 7% being unsure
