Yarra ready for the 2026 AFL Grand Final
This Saturday 26 September, the AFL Grand Final will be held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, with the Brisbane Lions taking on Freemantle. The match will start at 2:30pm.
The 2026 AFL Grand Final will be held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday 26 September, with the match starting at 2.30pm. This year’s Grand Final will see the Brisbane Lions take on Fremantle, with more than 100,000 people expected at the MCG.
With all the action on our doorstep, the City of Yarra is reminding footy fans of a few key things to help everyone stay safe and enjoy Grand Final Day.
Road closures
There are no planned closures of any main roads in Yarra, including Swan Street, on Grand Final Day. Stay tuned to our social media channels for any updates.
Roads immediately surrounding the MCG will be impacted. Barassi Way (formerly Brunton Avenue) will be closed to vehicles on Saturday 26 September as part of MCG event operations.
Drinking in public places
Alcohol is not permitted in public spaces around Swan Street from 9pm Friday 25 September until 9am Sunday 27 September under Yarra’s Local Laws.
This does not include outdoor dining areas at licensed venues, where alcohol may be consumed.

Getting around
With large crowds expected, we recommend planning ahead and using public transport. Extra services will run before and after the game.
Trains:
Jolimont Station — Hurstbridge and Mernda lines
Richmond Station — Alamein, Belgrave, Cranbourne, Frankston, Glen Waverley, Lilydale, Pakenham and Sandringham lines
Trams: Extra tram services will operate around the MCG precinct.
Bus: Route 246 runs from Clifton Hill/Queens Parade to Elsternwick Station and stops on Punt Road near Olympic Boulevard.
Public safety
Large crowds are expected across Richmond and the wider Yarra area. There will be increased rubbish collection and additional patrols by Victoria Police and Yarra’s Local Laws Officers.
Council continues to work closely with Victoria Police to address antisocial behaviour.
