Diversity and inclusion
We embrace and celebrate diversity in Yarra.
Yarra is a vibrant and diverse place. It is the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri, and a place of special significance for the broader Aboriginal community.
Yarra is home to:
- a diverse group of LGBTIQA+ communities
- one in five of our residents are from non-English speaking backgrounds
- one in four speak a language other than English at home.
Yarra is also home to a high proportion of residents living with socio-economic disadvantage, in what is an otherwise relatively affluent municipality.
We also have an increasing number of older residents, despite a median age less than the state average.
Our diversity ensures Yarra is dynamic with a lively culture built on a rich history.

In 2017 we decided to change the way we mark January 26 to better acknowledge the history and culture of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
