If you are building, renovating or changing the use of your property, you may need a planning permit, building permit or other permits we issue.

If you are building, renovating or changing the use of your property, you may need a planning permit, building permit or other permits issued under our local laws or Road Management Act 2004.

It is your responsibility to apply for and obtain the right permits before starting works. If you need a building permit, you will need to find a private building surveyor.

 

Permitted hours

Permitted working hours are regulated by General Local Law 2016.

They are:

  • Monday to Friday: 7.00am to 6.00pm
  • Saturday: 9.00am to 3.00pm Saturday
  • No works are permitted on Sunday, ANZAC Day, Christmas Day or Good Friday
  • All other public holidays, normal times apply unless stipulated in planning permit conditions

Where a planning permit has been issued for the proposed works, the planning permit conditions will show the permitted working hours.

For general maintenance work around the home, refer to the Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) Residential Noise Regulations.

Essential safety measures

The Essential safety measures guide by the Victorian Business Authority (VBA) defines your responsibilities as an owner of a building (other than a house or outbuilding) across various items including fire alarm systems, emergency lifts and exit doors.

The VBA also have a series of safety guides for homeowners. These guides cover a wide range of topics, including termites, bushfire protection, smoke alarms, decks and balustrades.
