Proposed changes to our governance rules
Monday 06 June 2022
Yarra City Council is committed to good governance and transparent decision-making.
Yarra City Council’s governance rules were first adopted in August 2020.
All councils are required to have governance rules in place which set the rules for Council meetings, as well as a number of other governance matters.
When online meetings became a necessity during the pandemic the Victorian Government approved temporary changes to the legislation to allow council meetings to take place online.
With these temporary rules expiring at the end of August it is a Victorian Government requirement that all councils across Victoria review and update their governance rules by 1 September 2022.
This change will give councils the flexibility to hold meetings in a way that best supports good decision-making.
Yarra City Council is committed to good governance and has taken the opportunity to review its full set of governance rules.
We have reviewed our governance rules and are proposing to make some changes aimed at ensuring our governance and decision-making processes are best practice.
A benchmarking exercise was also conducted as part of this proposal to compare Yarra’s governance rules against those of neighbouring councils.
A Municipal Monitor was appointed six months ago to oversee and guide good governance has also supported the process.
We are seeking community feedback on the proposed changes until Wednesday 6 July 2022.
