Social media
Social media is a powerful tool that can help you reach new audiences. Consider making a Facebook event page and researching Facebook business and community group pages to share your event on.
You could also approach local businesses and share links for them to promote on their pages.
Consider reaching out to community groups in your area. A number of active social media accounts that cater for areas in Yarra could support your promotion. Make sure that you give them all relevant information and advise that it's their decision whether to feature you or not.
Social media community groups include:
- Nicholson St Village (Fitzroy North and Carlton North)
- Richmond 3121 (Richmond)
- Bridge Road (Richmond)
- Visit Rathdowne Village (Carlton North)
- People of Gertrude Street (Fitzroy)
- North Fitzroy Village (Fitzroy North)
Mailing list
If you run events regularly, a mailing list is a good way to keep your audience informed. Tools like Mailchimp are free and make it easy to format newsletters to your subscribers.
Posters and flyers
Street posters are a form of 'ambient' promotion that can reach local audiences. Consider how effective this would be for your target audience and whether your budget can accommodate them.
Flyers are a cost-effective way to reach people, but they should be targeted to avoid wasting money and paper. You may put flyers up on community noticeboards or businesses that your audience visits. You could also do a mailbox drop if your event is relevant to a localised audience.
Council website and newsletters
Depending on the nature of your event, we may be able to help with your promotion.
You can publish Yarra community events on our event calendar by submitting a form on our website.
Events that create a business benefit may be included in our Economic Development newsletter. These events need to demonstrate a clear benefit to local businesses. For example, a street activation benefits local businesses because it invites people to visit a shopping strip.
Submit your event to [email protected], making sure to include all necessary information (what, where, when, who, links, photos or posters)
We can promote an event through our wider communications if it:
- supports a non-commercial activity
- is free or donates charges to a not-for-profit cause
- has no spelling or grammatical mistakes and provides all the relevant information
- is appropriate or of broad interest to the Yarra community
- does not endorse any political views.
We reserve the right to refuse to promote any event or activity if it does not meet our editorial standards.
Grants
We offer Small Project Grants of up to $1,000 that can be used to cover promotional costs. These grants are in high demand so make sure you discuss your application with our staff and apply early.
