Yarra City Council has opened a new, temporary pop-up park on Charlotte Street in Richmond. 

The road conveniently outside Richmond Library has been transformed into an area for our community to gather, read and socialise and includes new seating, pot plants and garden beds.  

The space also gives people the opportunity to have some respite from our bustling shopping precincts, and a space to relax and socialise.  

The temporary pop-up park in Charlotte Street will be in place from February to April 2024 and will allow Council to review traffic conditions in the area, prior to the construction of the permanent park in the new financial year.  

Yarra City Council Mayor Edward Crossland said the local community in Richmond urgently needs more open space.  

“Areas like these are vital for the community, especially to people living in the City of Yarra which has very little open space,” he said. 

“With only 12% of Richmond being open space, many local residents have little or no private open space, our community relies on public open spaces like parks and gardens for their health and wellbeing, recreation and socialising,” he said. 

“Yarra City Council will continue to advocate to and work collaboratively with the Victorian Government for support to deliver more open space in Yarra,” the Mayor said. 

This new park responds to Yarra’s Open Space Strategy which identifies opportunities for the conversion of roads to open space, as well as the Swan Street Streetscape Masterplan.  

This is just one of many new open spaces projects that have opened over the last few months including Cambridge Street Reserve in December and the new Otter Street Pocket Park in February.
