Community Awards 2023 Contribution to Sport

Manny Hendrix isn’t just a basketball coach – he’s a mentor, friend and support person to many young people in Yarra.

Manny coaches 2 boys’ teams at the Collingwood Basketball Association. The club is like a second home to many of the kids that live in the area and come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Beyond basketball, Manny has developed and implemented a program at the club that involves weekly study sessions, access to snacks and meals several nights a week and employment opportunities within the club. He shows players the importance of education and the lasting impact that it can have on their lives long after they stop playing basketball.

Manny isn’t just generous with his time but has also financially supported athletes out of his own pocket when they haven’t had the means to do so themselves.

Whether it’s opening up the stadium at 6.30am so kids can come and practice or taking calls late at night when his players just need someone to talk to – Manny volunteers his time and efforts every day of the week to better the lives of the young people he coaches.

Well done Manny and thanks for your ongoing contributions to sport and enriching the lives of young people in Yarra.
