Yarra Community Awards 2022 - Contribution to Diversity and Inclusion - Mzuri Dance

The Yarra Community Awards honour the everyday heroes who make outstanding contributions to our community.

Mzuri Dance ArtistTree Fund’s story

Mzuri Dance ArtisTree Fund has gone above and beyond to support culturally and linguistically diverse members of the community – particularly in housing estates across Atherton Gardens and North Richmond.

Suzanne Watts and her colleague Ayel Akot run a vibrant after school program focusing on cultural dance and music for young people, many from East African backgrounds. It’s a safe place where young people can connect socially, feel pride in their cultural identity and a strong sense of belonging.

During the extended lockdowns of 2021, the Mzuri Dance team made sure families knew how to access medical and financial support. They also worked tirelessly with local retailers and food relief organisations to deliver food to families who were struggling under the financial strain of the lockdowns.

Congratulations to Suzanne, Ayel and the entire Mzuri Dance team – and thank you for your ongoing contributions to diversity and inclusion our community.
