Did you know? Yarra collects almost 346 tonnes of recycling from homes, businesses and apartments every 2 weeks. That weighs more than 55 African elephants.
This collection includes 207 tonnes of paper, cardboard, plastic and metals. Each of these can be recycled into something new here in Australia.
We do still have some work to do. In the same two-week period, we collected almost 138 tonnes of glass in the yellow-lid recycling bin. That’s almost 700,000 jam jars worth of glass not being recycled because they were placed in the incorrect bin.
In Yarra, our recycling facility can’t accept any glass as they can get stuck in other recyclables like paper and cardboard, making them harder to recycle.
Purple-lid glass bin
Dark green-lid or red-lid rubbish bin
Glass jars (for example pasta sauce, jam etc.)
Broken glass (bottles and jars only)
Wine bottles
Beer bottles
Spirit (alcohol) bottles
Olive oil and sauce bottles
Drinking glasses
Broken windows and mirrors
Broken lightbulbs
Vases
Perfume or makeup containers
Plastic bottle tops and lids
Glass goes to a different facility, so we need to keep glass out of our yellow-lid recycling bins and use the purple-lid glass bin or red-lid rubbish bin instead.
We also collect 48 tonnes of soft plastics. These include plastic bags, cling wrap, chip packets, bubble wrap and plastic pockets.
Soft plastics can break machinery and should go in your red-lid rubbish bin or be recycled at your local supermarket.
