Tuesday 17 November 2020

Yarra's new Councillors have elected Cr Gabrielle de Vietri as Mayor and Cr Claudia Nguyen as Deputy Mayor for 2020/21.

This took place at a ceremonial Council Meeting last night, Monday 16 November, where the newly elected Councillors for the 2020–2024 Council term were also formally sworn in.

A contemporary artist, community activist and paralegal, Cr de Vietri has lived in Yarra for 15 years.

She loves our vibrant neighbourhoods, beautiful rivers, native wildlife and parklands. This is Cr de Vietri’s first year as a Councillor.

"Yarra is a wonderful place to live," said Cr de Vietri during her acceptance speech.

"There is still important work to be done, and we have a plan to do that."

She said she is committed to strong climate action, working towards housing for all, and supporting diverse communities “who are the heartbeat of Yarra”.

"[I plan to] keep Yarra wonderful, resilient, and to future-proof our city," she said.

This is also Cr Nguyen’s first year as Councillor. She was born, bred, educated in Yarra, and is a member of the LGBTI+ community and the daughter of Vietnamese refugees.

Cr Nguyen advised Yarra’s Public Housing COVID-19 working group and is Secretary of the Melbourne University Women’s Football Club. She is also a massive AFL fan who loves a kick at Citizens Park.

Congratulations to Crs de Vietri and Nguyen, and all other elected candidates.
