It's time to shape your future

Thursday 12 November 2020

We’re an inclusive and diverse community here in Yarra. We all have different interests, needs and hopes for the future. What do you want your future to look like?

Over the next two months we’ll be asking you what needs to happen for Yarra to be the best it can be in 2035.

Together we’re creating Yarra’s first ever Community Vision, which will guide all your council’s work over the next 15 years.

This is a once-in-a-generation chance to make your mark on this special place we all love. It’s also an opportunity to challenge some traditional ideas about how we live, work and play – particularly as we move into a post-COVID world.

Get amongst it!

We want to hear from as many people as possible. Whether you live in Yarra, own a business, work here or just like to visit sometimes – your voice matters.

Online

  • Tell us what you think online.
  • So everyone can have a say – no matter where you are in the world – we’re also hosting online workshops in December. More details coming soon.

In-person

  • We’re in your neighbourhood in November and December – pop on by for a chat and to share your thoughts, aspirations and ideas. These events are subject to COVID-19 restrictions at the time.

Your feedback in this round will feed into the Community Vision, our next Council Plan, annual budget and long-term plans for managing our assets and finances.

Stage one of consultation ends on Friday 15 January 2021 – don’t miss out!

What’s a Community Vision?

A Community Vision is an important document that describes our community’s long-term hopes, dreams and aspirations for Yarra.

It will be driven, developed and owned by Yarra’s community through an extensive engagement process, with us (council) being the facilitator.

The Community Vision will also shape our next four-year Council Plan, and 10-year plans for how we manage the city’s finances and assets.

Why do we need one?

The Local Government Act 2020 creates this opportunity to work really closely and deeply with our community to build a shared vision we can all be proud of.

How do we get there?

Broad engagement

From November 2020 to January 2021, we’re actively asking to everyone in Yarra to share their thoughts and priorities with us.

We’ll be doing this through online engagement and workshops, pop-up events, conversations and direct outreach.

Community panel

Next, we’ll be asking for expressions of interest to be part of a community panel that will dream up our brand new Community Vision.

The panel will be made up of roughly 60 people who accurately represent Yarra’s community by location, age, gender and cultural background. Anyone is welcome to put their hand up to join, but the final panel will be randomly selected to make it fair for everyone.

You don’t need any experience or special skills to take part. We’ll support you with whatever you need – including translations, large print documents and AUSLAN interpreters.

The community panel will meet over several weeks in mid-2021 to review the findings from the first stage of engagement. They will be given a lot of information and consider many different views to create the vision document.

At the end of this all, the new Community Vision will be formally presented to your councillors for adoption. Exciting stuff!
