Yarra Council has received the Climate Champion Award in the Cities Power Partnership Climate Awards 2020.

Yarra City Council is immensely proud to be the recipient of the Climate Champion Award.

“This award is testament to the leadership, innovation and unwavering dedication our staff have shown to the issue of Climate Change,” said CEO of Yarra, Vijaya Vaidyanath.

“As a council and a community, we recognised that the time to act was now. We took a collaborative approach. We recognised the importance of community and organisational partnerships and most importantly we acknowledged the role everyone has in responding to the Climate Change emergency."

“We set high expectations to deliver a best practice local government climate emergency response and I am incredibly proud to say we delivered.”

Yarra has a long history of taking bold climate action, as one of the first local governments to declare a climate emergency in 2017.

Yarra is also responsible for creating Australia’s second only Climate Emergency Plan, and Yarra’s operations are powered by 100% renewable electricity thanks to our investment in solar and our involvement in the Melbourne Renewable Energy Project.

“Our response was both meaningful and tangible and it has set the benchmark for others to follow and build from,” said Ms Vaidyanath.

The Cities Power Partnership is Australia’s largest network of local councils tackling climate action. 

This partnership, which Yarra joined last year, supports and promotes the efforts of councils all across Australia to take action on climate change.
