Independent experts have recommended a number of short term measures to improve the stability of the Yarra riverbank at Alphington, with investigations into long term solutions to continue.

Slumping of the riverbank caused 2 trees to fall into the river in January and May this year. A third tree was cut down in August due to concerns that it could also fall and cause further damage to the bank. 

According to a report by independent experts Alluvium, the slumping has been caused by increased soil moisture in and on the lower part of the riverbank. This has been linked to changed land and water management at the former Alphington paper mill site, which is currently being redeveloped by Glenvill.

Yarra Council is working with Glenvill to ensure short term measures are put in place to mitigate further damage to the riverbank, while detailed investigations for long term solutions take place.

We will also continue discussions with Glenvill to review the current closure of public access to the riverbank, and Council has requested they make the area safe and reinstate access for the community as soon as possible.
