Plan eco-friendly events with local food, efficient energy use, and reduced single-use items for sustainability.
Whether you need security guards and crowd controllers will depend on the nature and scale of your event.
Factors might include whether:
- alcohol is sold
- large crowds are expected
- valuable infrastructure needs protection
- event activities that are inherently dangerous or require crowds to be moved, such as fireworks or parades.
You should consider the elements of your event and its potential risks during the planning stage. This will help you determine if you need security guards. We recommend that you engage security guards early in your planning process and that a representative attends your briefings.
If you decide that your event needs security guards, consider what roles they will play at your event. Look for reputable providers and ensure they are insured and qualified for their required roles. For example, a security guard license alone doesn't allow someone to work as a crowd controller. You should ask for the provider's private business security license before engaging their services.
How many security guards do you need?
The number of security guards you need will depend on the expected number of people and the event-specific activities. Where necessary, Victoria Police and Liquor Licensing Victoria will determine this.
Most licensed events require a ratio of two guards for the first 100 patrons and then one guard per 100 patrons thereafter. The exact number will be specified in the conditions of the license issued by the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VCGLR).
