Commissioned for the West Space Window, Firstborn is a new work by Alyssa Powell-Ascura. Firstborn forms part of an evolving series by the artist exploring the complex emotional and cultural weight of being the eldest in a family, and presents a broader interrogation of power structures. Taking the form of a video essay, Firstborn examines the often unspoken responsibilities that come with this familial role — as protector, caretaker, and role model. It reflects the tension between familial duty and personal desire, offering a nuanced look at how the eldest sibling's sense of self is shaped by both societal expectations and individual sacrifice.

Bringing together sound, text and visual elements, this video essay marks the starting point for the artist investigating the generational and emotional burdens that are passed down, especially to women, and questioning how the role of the eldest sibling continues to evolve in contemporary life. Alyssa Powell-Ascura is an emerging creative working at the intersection of food, culture and community.

Raised in Bundjalung Country/Northern Rivers in New South Wales, and now based on Kaurna County in Tarntanya/Adelaide, her upbringing has influenced much of her environmental advocacies and love for nature.
