‘Crescent Stack, Colour Block, Mosaic Sketch' marks artist Martin George’s first move into public space and installation, expanding his practice beyond individual artworks to consider the exhibition as an environment.
Animal-like creatures repeat across strips of canvas, suggesting narrative. Sheets of paper with abstract patterns provide moments of openness and reflection. These are accompanied by wall painting, which creates a sense of expansion and possibility that continues beyond the wall itself.
Each of George's pieces was made within a single session, while the wall painting was created through improvisation during the installation process – a fast and un-edited approach to making that embraces accidents, where discovery becomes an important part of the work.
These relational aspects are just as significant as the individual pieces, as new narratives and associations emerge. ‘Crescent Stack, Colour Block, Mosaic Sketch' exemplifies George's practice as a site of imagination and material exploration.
Artist bio
Martin George has a studio-based practice driven by an instinctive, embodied approach to artmaking. He works in the disciplines of expanded painting and drawing, finding meaning through material exploration and play. Since 2016, he has held seven solo exhibitions and over 20 group exhibitions in Naarm/Melbourne, interstate, and overseas. His artworks have been shortlisted for several Australian art prizes. During 2026, he is a year-long artist in residence at Billilla Historic Mansion in Brighton, supported by Bayside Council.
