Rewilding Yarra is a unique, highly accessible and engaging ephemeral outdoor pasteup art installation celebrating the wildlife of the City of Yarra.
Despite its inner-city location and heavy urbanisation, Yarra hosts surprisingly diverse wildlife including yellow-tailed black cockatoos, sacred kingfishers, marbled geckos and eastern water dragons.
Mammals such as grey kangaroos, swamp wallabies and echidnas also once here and still occasionally appear along the lower Yarra in the area.
Rewilding Yarra uses high-quality images of local wildlife in a playful, tactile and engaging way to create a living, breathing highly accessible artwork which is firmly grounded in place.
The images created are large and highly realistic as well as intriguing and uplifting, and together the images form a unified and aesthetic whole that brings to viewers a new awareness of the local environment.
Rewilding Yarra will be installed on walls on the perimeter of Victoria Park Abbotsford facing Bath St on Thursday November 17 to Saturday November 19, weather permitting, and will be in place for around two months.
The artist and photographer behind Rewilding Yarra is Yarra local Ian Sutherland who has spent a large part of the past thirty years watching wildlife in the inner city as well as other places further afield.
