Kutchas Koorioke
-

Cruise the streets of Wurundjeri country with acclaimed Mutti Mutti songman Kutcha Edwards and a deadly cast singing songs and sharing stories - great yarns and lots of laughs.

In Season Two we meet a powerhouse of singer - songwriters: Allara, Birdz, Selwyn Burns, Tjimba Possum Burns, Bumpy, Emma Donovan, Kee’ahn, Kamahi Djordon King, Fred Leone, The Merindas, Mo’Ju, Dr Shellie Morris and Dallas Woods. Joined by local legends and regular passengers, Uncle Jack Charles and Shiralee Hood.

Following the celebrated first season of Kutcha’s Koorioke, this new season takes the Aboriginal story back to the streets and to the many places which connect audiences to community, music, history and land, celebrating country and the Koori story of Fitzroy.

Music and song have held our communities together since the beginning of time. They have the power to lift our spirits. As Kutcha Edwards sings, “‘We must stand together to get back up again”. Kutcha’s Koorioke invites you in to share our songs, deadly humour and deep connections to country and culture.

Born on the Murrumbidgee River, Kutcha is a survivor of the Stolen Generations, forcibly removed from his parents in 1967 to live in institutions for 11 years. It is Kutcha’s lived experience of the Stolen Generations and his proud Mutti Mutti, Yorta Yorta, Nari Nari lineage that has shaped his diverse creative output in groups like Blackfire and The Black Arm Band. He has since forged a successful solo career, producing 5 albums as well as 5 theatre shows. Kutcha says music chose him as well as being part of his healing. The same can be said for his work in radio and prisons. He has produced ‘Beyond the Bars’, live prison radio broadcasts with 3CR in Fitzroy, for the last 20 years. The broadcast received a Human Rights award for the work of ‘sharing the mic and giving voice to the voiceless.’

“What’s Kutcha’s Koorioke? To me it’s about talking about our spirit, our Songlines, our connection to not only our places of birth but our places of belonging. It’s an opportunity for a yarn, talking about family and about how our songs are created. That’s the true essence. It’s not all about me, it’s about us.” Kutcha Edwards
