Yarra City Council opposes plans by the Victorian Government to demolish public housing towers

Wednesday 13 December 2023

Last night, Yarra City Council committed to oppose plans by the Victorian Government to demolish 44 public housing towers across the state, including 12 towers in Fitzroy, Collingwood and Richmond.

Council also renewed their commitment to continue advocating on behalf our Yarra residents living in public housing.

Mayor of Yarra Cr Edward Crossland said the provision of public, community and affordable housing is a significant priority for Council.

He said Council strongly opposes the privatisation of public housing sites across the City of Yarra and is urging the Victorian Government to maintain existing public housing, and to ensure a significant increase in public and social housing dwellings to address the housing affordability crisis.

“The City of Yarra has one of the highest populations of residents living in public housing in Victoria,” he said.

“Our community have told us they want to remain in their homes. Demolishing Yarra’s 12 public housing towers would create uncertainty and erode people’s sense of community, belonging and security,” he said.

“Yarra City Council urges the Victorian Government to maintain Yarra’s existing public housing sites and to reconsider other sites in Yarra for additional public housing.”
