COVID-19 restrictions easing in metropolitan Melbourne

From 11.59pm on Thursday 8 July 2021, the COVID-19 restrictions across metropolitan Melbourne (including the City of Yarra) will ease further.

This will bring metropolitan Melbourne into line with restrictions in regional Victoria and the same COVIDSafe settings will apply state-wide.

These changes follow the announcement from the State Government today.

What’s changing?

Masks

  • Masks will still be required for indoor, public facing settings such as indoor shopping centres, supermarkets, department stores and indoor markets unless you have an exemption.
  • Masks will no longer be required at schools for students or staff.
  • Masks will no longer be required at workplaces that aren't public facing for example, if you work at an office or a factory.
  • Masks will still be required for workplaces that are public facing such as retail, hospitality and customer service.

Venues

  • A range of venues across Melbourne will move to a density limit of 1 person per 2sqm. This includes:
    • hospitality
    • gyms
    • sport and recreation venues
    • community facilities
    • creative studios
    • places of worship.
  • Dancefloors will be allowed with a COVID Check-In Marshall for up to 50 people at a time.

Public events

  • Outdoor stadiums can have 75% of their capacity, up to 40,000 people.
  • Indoor stadiums can have 75% of their capacity, up to 7500 people.
  • Theatres can have 75% of their capacity, up to 2000 people.

Restrictions still in place.

Social gatherings

You can still only have up to 15 visitors to your home per day. Infants under 12 months aren’t included in this cap.
