We are committed to reducing transport emissions and increasing use of active and public transport such as electric vehicles.
We are committed to reaching our target of zero-net emissions in Yarra by 2030, as outlined in our Climate Emergency Plan [ PDF, 2.14 MB] .
To achieve this, we need to reduce our transport emissions by increasing our use of:
active and public transport
Electric Vehicles (EVs) including bicycles (e-bikes), public transport vehicles and cars.
We support and encourage the uptake of EVs by:
working with the Victorian Government to install public electric car chargers
advocating for electrification of Melbourne's bus fleet
transitioning our car fleet to electric cars and bicycles (currently there are six electric vehicles and four EV trucks)
ensuring new developments are “EV-ready” by requiring electrical infrastructure to be incorporated into building designs.
Charging your car
There are two fast-charging stations in converted car parking bays at the Collingwood Library.
These are available for the community and are powered by 100% renewable energy.
We provided the sites for the charging stations, which were installed by Evie Networks and received funding through the Federal Government's Future Fuels Fund.
Two more installations are planned in partnership with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP). Find more information on the Victoria Government website.
Kerbside electric car charging
The Yarra Climate Emergency Plan [ PDF, 2.14 MB] includes an action for us to facilitate public electric car charging in Yarra. We also acknowledge the need for public chargers to support uptake of electric cars, including residents without off-street parking.
Off-street charging is the preferred solution. This is due to the impact kerbside can have on limited public space, access and community safety.
Local laws do not permit electrical cables on footpaths. This is a tripping hazard and an obstruction for people with a disability. Any cords placed in this manner are subject to enforcement action.
We are monitoring the trial of kerbside charging in other areas to assess its feasibility.
