Black Convicts: How Slavery Shaped Australia — Santilla Chingaipe
-

Join us for an insightful author talk with Santilla Chingaipe, who will discuss her new book, Black Convicts.

On the First Fleet of 1788, at least 15 convicts were of African descent, and by 1840, that number had risen to almost 500. In her new book, Santilla uncovers the erased stories of Australia’s African descent convicts and the injustices of slavery, exploring how empire and race have shaped our history.

Through stories spanning Africa, the Americas, and Europe, Black Convicts reveals the hidden and often uncomfortable truths which have obscured this critical part of our country's past.
