A new Mayor for Yarra

Tuesday 28 November 2017

Cr Daniel Nguyen is Yarra’s new Mayor, following a vote at last night’s Ceremonial Council Meeting at Richmond Town Hall. This will be Cr Nguyen’s first term as Mayor following his election to Council in 2016.

In accepting the role of Mayor, Cr Nguyen described the opportunity to serve the people of Yarra as a “remarkable privilege”. He acknowledged the special role played by the Traditional Owners of Yarra and paid tribute to the city’s diversity of voices and cultures.

“Our Council is unique in its fabric, a fabric woven from the threads of countless backgrounds, histories and experiences,” the Mayor said.

The Mayor identified a range of priorities for the next 12-months, including planning for Yarra’s activity centres, improvements to the Yarra Planning Scheme, and development of a community-focused budget for 2018/19.

Community engagement remains a high priority for the new Mayor, and he identified the participation of young people as a key area of interest.  He said a focus of his mayoral term will be building stronger connections with local young people and getting them more involved in Council decision-making, working hand-in-hand on the issues that will affect the next generation.

Noting that some people in Yarra are facing trying circumstances, the Mayor pledged to lead a council that “continues working and fighting for a more equitable, sustainable, and inclusive community”.

A keen Tigers supporter, Cr Nguyen said, “I don't think anything will top seeing the Richmond Tigers win a premiership but having the chance to take on Mayorship is pretty close!”

At the same meeting, Cr Misha Coleman became the first ever Deputy Mayor of Yarra Council, and councillors were appointed to various committees and working groups.

Councillors also paid tribute to outgoing Mayor Cr Amanda Stone, who has concluded her one year term.  Further information:
