Community advocates’ legacy lives on at the upgraded Golden Square playground

The upgraded playground at Golden Square at Bicentennial Park in Burnley was officially opened over the weekend, building on a legacy of community advocacy that has shaped the site for decades.  

Deputy Mayor Dr Sharon Harrison, Councillor for Boulevard Ward says the new playground will provide vital open space for the community of Burnley. 

“As well as giving more ways for local children to play and explore, this new playground has created a new space for the community to gather,” she says, 

The new playground includes: 

• updated play equipment 

• a new cubby made with durable and sustainable materials 

• accessible spaces for families, and  

• more opportunity for active play. 

There is also additional shade thanks to the nine new mature trees, with the beloved Fairy Tree the centrepiece of the playground. 

Council also acknowledges the enduring contributions of the late Ron and Shirley Pinnell, whose advocacy helped secure the site for community use after the demolition of Burnley Primary School.
