It’s these kinds of questions – and more – that University of Melbourne PhD researcher and technology writer, Cory Alpert explores in his work, in conversation with digital rights advocate and writer, Samantha Floreani. Cory spent three years in the White House during the Biden-Harris administration as an advisor on policy and presidential campaigns.

Cory Alpert served for three years in the White House during the Biden-Harris Administration as an Advance Associate in the Executive Office of the President. He was previously an advisor to the humanitarian response and war crimes investigations in Ukraine, and the senior policy advisor to the President of the US Conference of Mayors. In addition, Cory is an alumnus of three Presidential campaigns, including as regional chief of staff for Pete Buttigieg’s historic 2020 campaign. He has also advised the UN Secretary-General on political and youth engagement.

Samantha Floreani is a digital rights advocate and writer based in Naarm (Melbourne). She advocates for a liberatory digital future in which everyone can thrive. She is currently undertaking PhD research on the ways that digital technologies in Australia’s private rental sector impact renters and housing justice.

Her advocacy work focuses on campaigning for privacy law reform, online safety, and resisting surveillance technologies. Her writing explores technology, power and social norms and has been published in The Guardian, Overland, Kill Your Darlings, and elsewhere.
