International Womens Day 2024 in Yarra

Friday 01 March 2024 - Wednesday 13 March 2024

Celebrate International Women's Day in Yarra with art exhibitions, free group exercise classes, professional networking and a Wikipedia edit-a-thon.

Every year, communities around the world come together to celebrate women's achievements and take action to drive gender equality on International Women's Day.

At Yarra Council, we have a key role to play in promoting social change for gender equality, contributing to a more fair and safe community.

The campaign theme for International Women's Day 2024 is Inspire Inclusion. When we inspire others to understand and value women's inclusion, we forge a better world. And when women themselves are inspired to be included, there's a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment.

We encourage everyone in our community to attend our local International Women's Day events and activities.

Overcoming This Grief: Stories from the Vietnamese Women Surviving Family Violence in Australia by Emily Dang - Art Exhibition
Showing until Sunday 5 May
Fitzroy Library - 128 Moor Street, Fitzroy

This exhibition is part of a PhD research project by artist Emily Dang, exploring family violence experiences of Vietnamese women on partner visas. As a Vietnamese-Australian, Dang hopes to increase awareness of family violence within this community and recognise the resilience and strength of victim-survivors.

i-Spy by Savina Hopkins - Art Exhibition
Showing until Sunday 5 May
Bargoonga Nganjin North Fitzroy Library - 182-186 St Georges Rd, Fitzroy North

The assemblages in i-Spy by artist Savina Hopkins are created entirely from children’s second-hand building blocks, generated through consideration of the material properties and historic uses of these toys. This exhibition explores the value of creative play and the connections between learning, development and creativity in adulthood.

jarrawujarrawuwarra by Ros Sultan - Projection Artwork
Showing until Sunday 28 April
Peel Street Park, Collingwood

Ros Sultan is an Eastern Arrernte and Gurindji woman who uses ink; texta pens; acrylic paints; and finely ground earth that resembles pigment or ochre to create intricate and highly detailed images. For this exhibition, Sultan’s detailed drawings created at a truly miniscule size (never more than a few centimetres wide) are projected at a momentous scale. The light beams life into the lines, shapes, curves and colours of each delicately arranged composition creating movement as they dance across the park.

Scar Marks by Genevieve Elliot - Public Artwork
Showing until Monday 25 March
Carlton Library Light Boxes - Carlton Library, 667 Rathdowne Street, Carlton North

Scar Marks highlights the artist's interest in boundaries and places through serviceable objects or ‘survey marks’ to create a cartographical reading of the Carlton area.
