Active travel to schools

Active travel is good for the environment, our physical health and even improves learning.

Scooting to school

Travelling actively to school, such as by walking, riding a bike or scooting, has many benefits for young people.

These include:

  • Being good for their health and mental wellbeing
  • Building confidence and life skills
  • Supporting learning (studies have shown that travelling actively to school can help increase concentration and learning)
  • Creating opportunities for connections with family, friends and neighbours.

Active travel to school also makes the streets around school safer by reducing traffic congestion and is good for the environment.

New Deal For Schools

We work with local primary schools to promote active transport and give children and parents the confidence and skills to walk, ride and scoot to school.

School crossings

We manage school crossing supervisors who assist pedestrians of all ages, but mainly school age children, to cross the road safely.

The operational school crossings in Yarra are staffed by permanent part-time and relief school crossing supervisors. They are located at both pedestrian light crossings and at flagged children's crossings.

School crossing supervisors work for one hour in the morning, generally between 8.00am to 9.00am, and one hour in the afternoons, generally between 3.00pm and 4.00pm.
