Yarra invests an additional $500,000 to address illegal graffiti
12 Feb 2025

Quicker response times in removing graffiti and making it easier for residents to request graffiti removal were part of a new management framework adopted at the City of Yarra Council Meeting on 11 February.

"This will be money well spent,” said Mayor Stephen Jolly.

This is an initiative that has overwhelming community support, not just from residents, but also from street artists who are tired of having their work tagged – something that doesn’t happen to their works in other cities throughout the world.

An additional $500,000 has been committed across the next six months as part of the newly adopted Graffiti Management Framework 2024-2030. The framework was developed in response to conversations with the community over the last four years as well as feedback received during consultation in June 2024.

Highlights of the framework include:

  • improving our service levels and shortening response times to removing graffiti
  • doubling the number of paint vouchers and graffiti kits available per year for residents and businesses
  • centralising graffiti removal to have one point of contact
  • proactively cleaning graffiti from properties flagged as unsightly
  • streamlining access issues with property owners
  • making it easier for renters to request graffiti removal themselves

As part of the Framework’s adoption, Council will immediately begin a proactive and assertive campaign to notify property owners in retail precincts and key activities centres of the need to remove graffiti. This cleaning can happen either by Council or by property owners themselves.

This practice also removes the need to ask for permission n before removing graffiti in these key activity centres and help us do more to keep Yarra looking clean.
