Submitting a petition to the Yarra City Council. What does a petition include? How do I lodge a petition? How many people need to sign a petition?
A petition (or joint letter) is a formal written document that expresses concern about an issue and requests action be taken. Although electronic petitions do exist, to be formally tabled at a Council meeting a petition must be submitted on paper.
There are two parts to a petition:
- the 'request' - this is a brief statement at the top of each page that outlines the issue and what action you'd like taken
- the 'petitioners' - this is a list of people supporting the petition
A petition must:
- be signed by at least 12 people to be a considered a petition
- have the full request written at the top of every page
- include the name, address and signature of every petitioner
- not be written in pencil
- not be attached to any piece of paper other than another page of the petition
Any person may organise a petition, but only a Councillor can table it at a Yarra City Council meeting.
You can lodge your paper petition by posting it to:
Yarra City Council

Or you can hand deliver it to:

If you are the organiser of a petition, please include a separate letter with your contact details, so we can reply to you after the petition has been tabled.
Once your petition is lodged, it will be either be:
- referred to a Council officer for consideration and response or
- treated as an address to the Council if it relates to a matter being considered at a Council meeting
Yes, electronic petitions can be submitted, but they will not be formally tabled at a Council meeting.
Electronic petitions are referred directly by the Chief Executive Officer to the relevant Council officer for consideration and response.
If you want to lodge a petition to Victorian Parliament or Federal Parliament please contact them directly.
