Learn about the committee

The purpose of the Families and Children’s Advisory Committee is to:

  • provide advice and feedback on Yarra’s strategic planning, policy, service provision and advocacy for families and children.
  • provide advice to Council to achieve its commitment to community engagement and consultation.
  • act as a conduit for the exchange of information and views between the community, Council and other representative bodies on issues relevant to children and their families.

The Families and Children’s Advisory Committee is an advisory committee of Council. The Committee has a purely strategic focus.

The Committee should focus on issues and opportunities that are relevant across the entire municipality.

The Committee has no delegated decision-making power from Council.

  • 2 Councillors (appointed annually)
  • 10 community members

Applicants will be requested to submit a short statement of capabilities addressing criteria from the relevant section below:

For community members

  • are Yarra residents and can demonstrate capability in contributing to strategic planning and policy for families and children
  • can demonstrate a sound working knowledge and understanding of the issues affecting families and children
  • can work with Council and other community stakeholders to understand different points of view and sources of information; and
  • are committed to engaging with and hearing the voices of families and
    children.

For stakeholder organisations

  • significant and appropriate experience providing services, policy or planning for families and/or children in Yarra.
  • capacity to communicate with non-experts in strategy, policy and planning.
  • willingness to share information and contribute to implementation of strategy and policy.
  • commitment to engaging with and hearing the voices of families and children.

As far as practicable, the composition of community members will reflect the diversity of the community in accordance with the Council Committees Policy [ PDF, 246.73 KB] .
