Meet Sarah Harrington

Meet Recreation and Leisure Manager, Sarah Harrington. Sarah joined the team late 2024 and is a great role model for women in the field. Starting out as a gym instructor, Sarah has been involved in the aquatics and recreation industry for 20 years.

How have lifesaving roles shaped your career?

The responsibility of being part of a team that directly impacts the lives of others has instilled in me a deep sense of purpose and discipline. It has taught me the importance of staying calm under pressure, lateral thinking to solve problems, and the power of quick decision-making. These roles have also connected me with a strong network of individuals who share a common commitment to community, which has been invaluable in my career development.

What do you believe is the value of being a part of a lifesaving team?

Being part of a lifesaving team provides a unique sense of fulfillment that few other roles can offer. The immediate impact you have on someone's life is incredibly powerful, and that sense of purpose fuels teamwork and collaboration. You learn to trust your team and to rely on others in critical moments, which builds bonds that go beyond the workplace.

Additionally, working in such a high-stakes environment requires constant learning and growth. The value lies in not just the skills you develop but in the shared dedication to something much bigger than yourself – saving lives and making a tangible difference.

What would you say to women wanting to gain lifesaving experience?

To women wanting to gain lifesaving experience, I would say: don't hold back. The world of lifesaving roles is one that is open to anyone who is committed and passionate, regardless of gender. Start by gaining the necessary training and certifications, and take the initiative to be hands-on, whether in a professional setting or through volunteering. There will be challenges along the way, but perseverance, grit, and a willingness to continuously learn will set you apart. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals, seek mentorship, and embrace every opportunity to prove to yourself that you are capable. You bring unique perspectives and strengths to these roles, and your presence can inspire others to follow suit.
