A planning permit application has been made by Council for: ‘Demolition of safety fencing, tree removal and works associated with a golf course redesign in the Heritage Overlay.
This is a retrospective application for the Burnley Golf Course Redesign works. The application is currently on public notification.
The application material can be viewed online through the planning portal.
All enquiries regarding the planning permit application and planning permit process should be directed to Statutory Planning Department at Yarra City Council.
The planned risk mitigation works for the course have been completed. A final round of planting will occur in the cooler months.
Anyone can make a submission on the planning permit application. Information about how to do this is on supporting or objecting to a planning permit application page.
There is an advertising period for 14 days with signs/boards on the golf course fences.
Following the completion of advertising, a review of the application will be carried out by an independent planning specialist.
In 2023, some trees and vegetation were removed at Burnley Golf Course as part of a community safety response to reduce the risk of golf balls travelling on to the freeway.
The trees were removed following an extensive assessment by an independent arborist that found most trees slated for removal were of low arboricultural value.
While there is not a planning permit trigger to remove native vegetation under the native vegetation provision of the planning scheme, we have since identified that a permit was required for tree removal under the Heritage Overlay that covers a large area of land including the golf course.
Therefore, a planning permit application has been made retrospectively for the Burnley Golf Course re-design works.
Under the Planning and Environment Act 1987 it is possible for a planning permit application to be made retrospectively.
The application is not seeking approval to use the land for a Golf Course because the use is existing and is permitted under the Yarra Planning Scheme.
