Updated advice on coronavirus (COVID-19)
Yarra Council is closely following the advice of the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services.
Following the State Government's announcement to reinstate Stage 4 coronavirus (COVID19) restrictions we have decided that, as an essential service, the market will remain open during Stage 4 restrictions.
Markets are considered an essential service, as they are an important source of fresh produce for our community and support our local businesses.
We'll continue to provide updates on the market in the coming weeks as information becomes available.
Groceries only (No flowers, coffee or hot food)
The State Governments guidelines relating to 'markets' clearly state: ‘Markets for food only with strict enforcement of density obligations.’
The ongoing success and operation of the Gleadell Street Market must be considered as a whole and regrettably, this may result in some stallholders being restricted in what they can sell with Stage 4 restrictions in place.
Items that will not be sold during Stage 4 include:
- Takeaway coffee
- Hot food
Council has a responsibility to all stallholders and the community to provide a safe environment and abide by the directions of State Government.
Physical distancing and other safety and hygiene measures will be in place to protect shoppers and local traders. This includes:
- Providing hand sanitiser and hand washing facilities
- Limiting the numbers of people in the market at any one time to maintain a 1.5 metre distance
- Managing queues to allow ease of access
- Using contactless payments where available at stalls
- No coffee, tea, hot drinks or hot food sold during Stage 4 restrictions
- Asking customers to not handle produce and wash thoroughly before eating
One person per household
We encourage you to shop with purpose to protect yourself and the community while shopping at the market. Please consider this advice when planning your trip:
- Designate one person to do shopping (this is now mandatory - we will not allow couples or groups to shop together at the market due to Stage 4 restrictions).
- Shop quickly, be efficient and plan ahead
- If you have any symptoms or don’t feel well, don’t attend.
No mask, no market
In line with State Government regulations, starting from Saturday 25 July, you must wear a mask when you shop the market.
- A no-mask no-entry policy is now in place for the Gleadell Street Market
- All stall holders and their staff will be wearing masks

About the market
Every Saturday, Gleadell Street in Richmond is transformed into a bustling fresh food market, overflowing with seasonal fruits and vegetables, fresh bread, herbs and other gourmet delights.
The Gleadell Street Market is plastic-free, so remember to bring your reusable shopping bag to carry your purchases. Stallholders are allowed to use biodegradable bags only and must not have them on display.
The market is owned and operated by Yarra City Council.
We hold a stallholders’ working group quarterly and all stallholders are invited.
The market is open on Saturdays from 7am to 1pm.
Gleadell Street, Richmond VIC 3121
Gleadell Street is 15 minutes east of Melbourne CBD. Catch tram 48 or 75 and disembark at Stop 19 – Richmond Town Hall.
How do I set up a stall?
Stallholders tend to stay for many years, and there are no casual stalls, so the turnover is very low.
Given the high demand for stalls, we are currently not accepting new applications to join the waiting list.
If you are interested in a stall at the Gleadell Street Saturday market you need to read the Gleadell Street Market Policy and the Gleadell Street Market Procedure and Protocols Manual.
How do I apply for a free community stall?
We provide a free market stall between 7am to 1pm each Saturday when the market is operating.
The stall is available for local Yarra community groups, school groups and not-for-profit organisations to assist their fundraising and promotional activities.
You can book the free community stall up to 3 times per year.
To apply you need to download, complete and submit a temporary public space application form.
You can submit your form via:
- Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
- Mail: Yarra City Council, PO Box 168 Richmond VIC 3121
- In person at a Yarra City Council contact centre
How do I apply for a marquee?
We have a marquee and folding table available for local Yarra community groups, school groups and not-for-profit organisations.
If you wish to book the marquee and/or table when using our community stall please tell one of our officers when making your application. If you do not make a specific request for these items prior to the day they may not be available.
You need to make a booking prior to market day.
On market day you need to meet our officer to collect and set-up the prior to the market opening (before 6:45 am). The officer will meet you at the close of market trading to collect these items.
