The Yarra River is a major parkland, biodiversity and recreation corridor serving both local communities and the wider region.
It is a crucial landscape and environmental corridor and helps define the identity of Yarra.
To help protect the Yarra River, the Victorian State Government released the Yarra Strategic Plan (YSP) - Burndap Birrarung burndap umarkoo in February 2022.
Yarra Strategic Plan
The Yarra Strategic Plan (YSP) was developed in partnership with the Bunurong and Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Traditional Owners and is governed by the Yarra Collaboration Committee.
The Yarra Collaboration Committee includes representatives from the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation and State and Local Government organisations, including Yarra.
The plan builds on the Yarra River Protection (Wilip-gin Birrarung murron) Act 2017 and sets out a 10-year strategy and a 50-year community vision for the river.
This new approach will help protect the river from the challenges of rapid population growth, urbanisation and climate change.
Melbourne Water is the lead agency for the implementation of the YSP.
