Our population is growing

• In 2021, more than 90,100 residents lived in Yarra.
• On average, two people lived in each home.
• By 2041, our population is forecast to have grown to more than 149,000 people.

Why we need a housing strategy

As more people choose to call Yarra home, housing growth needs to be planned and managed in a way that maintains the city's key characteristics and liveability. We want to create:

• more affordable housing
• more housing choice and diversity
• well-designed communal spaces

The Yarra Housing Strategy, adopted in 2018, guides our decisions about residential land use and building activity in our community.
