School crossings operate across Yarra to help our children and community cross roads safely.

Hours of operation for school crossings are within school zone times during the Victorian school term. Crossings will typically operate between the times of 8am - 9:30am and 2:30pm - 4pm for 1 hour depending on the crossing location and school.

The Role of School Crossing Supervisors

Crossing Supervisors are there to assist children cross the road safely on their way to and from school. Children may not understand traffic laws or be aware of their surroundings, and small children may not be readily visible to drivers.

In Yarra, we have over 45 school crossings where our supervisors attend to help almost 3000 children cross the road safely daily during school days.

Safety in School Zones

Due to an increase in traffic at drop off and pick up times, both traffic and parking issues can pose a risk to the safety of children. Educating kids and encouraging safe driving behaviour can help improve safety in the school zone.

Tips for parents and guardians:

  • Use designated parking areas - Always park in marked bays legally.
  • Avoid 'no stopping' zones - These areas are critical for clear visibility and safe traffic flow.
  • Model safe behaviour - Lead by example and follow all traffic rules, School crossings are the safest place to cross the road. Reinforce a positive crossing procedure: STOP, LOOK, LISTEN, THINK
  • Supervise children near traffic - Keep a close eye on children when they are close to roads.
  • Always let children out on the kerb side - This helps ensure they exit directly onto the footpath, away from traffic.

As a child safe organisation and community, Yarra is committed to ensuring the safety of all children, especially around our schools.

Our aim is to ensure a safer environment for all children during their commute to and from school. Our Council staff, including Parking Enforcement Officers and School Crossing Supervisors, work diligently to keep our school zones safe. We understand that parking around schools can be challenging, but cooperation is essential to ensuring the well-being of all children and pedestrians.

School Zone Speed Limits

All school speed limits across the State are clearly signposted. Look out for the speed signs near schools and slow down to improve safety for children.

Children Crossing

When the flags are displayed at a children’s crossing, you must stop for pedestrians who are waiting to cross or who have started crossing.

You must remain stopped until the crossing is clear. These rules apply even if there is no crossing supervisor.
